For conference groups in western Germany, Cologne sits conveniently between two very different Advent destinations: Aachen, about 35 minutes away, and Münster, reachable in just under two hours. Groups preferring to base their format in Cologne itself will find a wide choice of venues among the conference hotels in Cologne for groups of every size.

Aachen: a compact old town with a Printen tradition

The Eurogress Aachen offers three halls and eleven meeting rooms for up to 2,830 delegates, set in the Stadtgarten park at the edge of the historic old town. The Aachen Christmas market (20 November to 23 December 2026) is inseparable from the city’s famous Printen gingerbread and unfolds through the narrow lanes around the cathedral and town hall – a compact format with strong brand recognition.

Münster: six Christmas markets instead of one

Münster answers with the Congress Centrum Halle Münsterland, whose Congress Saal seats up to 1,071, backed by nine further meeting rooms. Rather than one large market, the city offers six independent Christmas markets across its old town – from the historic wooden pyramid at Aegidiimarkt to the sustainability-focused market at Harsewinkelplatz – all running from 23 November to 23 December 2026. For groups who value variety in their supporting programme, that’s a clear advantage over a single, if larger, market.

Why Cologne makes a sensible base

There is no direct train between Aachen and Münster themselves – the fastest route involves at least two changes and takes just under three hours. That’s not a realistic window for a shared day programme in both cities. Cologne, by contrast, reaches both destinations comfortably: around 35 minutes to Aachen, just under two hours to Münster. That makes Cologne a practical base for choosing between the two formats, or for bringing delegates from different regions together in one central location.

Looking for a direct combination instead?

Groups wanting to combine two cities in a single day will find that further south, between Nuremberg and Augsburg, connected directly by ICE in around 70 minutes. More in our overview of Advent meetings in Germany.
